Sciatic Nerve Pain and Sciatica Symptoms
Muscle Balance Therapy
There are a number of different conditions that can cause the sciatica symptoms.
We discuss some of these in other articles – Herniated Disc, Piriformis Syndrome and Spinal Stenosis.
Sciatic nerve pain is a set of symptoms that develop when there is compressions, inflammation or irritation of the sciatic nerve.
The first step to relieving your particular sciatic nerve pain is to determine the root cause of YOUR specific problem. We give details here of our recommended 3-Step System – Assessment, Pain Relief, Exercise – Exercises for Sciatica.
The sciatic nerve is the largest and longest nerve in the body and extends from each side of the lower spine, through the buttocks and the back of the thigh and down to the foot. It is the way the legs and feet send sensations to the brain and is responsible for the movement of knees, ankles and feet.

Sciatica symptoms can vary from person to person and can include any (but usually not all!) of the following:
- Burning or tingling in the buttocks
- The sciatic nerve pain can travel down the hamstring and all the way into the toes
- Sciatica pain can sometimes be felt on just one side of the body and sometimes on both
- Back and leg pain
- Lower back pains
- Numbness
- Muscular weakness
- Shooting pains
- Difficulty in moving or controlling the leg
- Reduction in reflex reaction
- In rare cases, bladder or bowel incontinence may occur.
These sciatica symptoms can vary from being slightly uncomfortable to being very severe and debilitating – the sciatic nerve pain may be sharp, dull, burning or tingling and it may be accompanied by the intermittent shooting pains. Sometimes the sciatica symptoms are consistent and sometimes they may come and go, depending on what you are doing. People can experience the greatest discomfort whilst sitting down and others find it very painful trying to stand up, bending forward or backward, or walking. Sometimes coughing, sneezing or laughing can make the pain worse. Sciatic nerve pain can come on gradually or can appear very suddenly.
Whatever your sciatica symptoms are, whether they are mild or severe, it is a good idea to deal with the problem of sciatic nerve pain as soon as possible.
You should determine the cause and formulate a plan to work towards your recovery. You may need to take medication to help with pain relief but in my opinion, this is not a good long-term option.
The sciatic nerve pain relief I discovered is a completely natural treatment and addressed the underlying cause of my sciatica pain, as shown in the diagram below – TREAT THE CAUSE, NOT THE CONDITION!
